Lalbaugcha Raja

Lalbaugcha Raja, meaning “the King of Lalbaug,” is home to Mumbai’s most famous and revered Ganesh idol, housed in the bustling Lalbaug neighbourhood. Each year during Ganesh Chaturthi, throngs of devotees flock to Lalbaugcha Raja, believing that this powerful idol of Lord Ganesh has the divine ability to fulfil wishes and bring blessings.

The story of Lalbaugcha Raja begins in the early 1900s when Lalbaug was known for its thriving textile mills—over a hundred were clustered in this industrious neighbourhood. By the 1930s, however, the rise of industrialisation led to a significant decline in the textile trade, affecting countless businesses and families. During these challenging times, the local community turned to Lord Ganesh, praying for guidance and support to help them navigate through the tough times.

Not long after, the community was granted a plot of land, which eventually became the vibrant Lalbaug Market. Slowly, fortunes began to turn, with businesses reviving and the neighbourhood flourishing once again. Grateful for the blessings they believed had been granted by Lord Ganesh, the residents decided to dedicate part of this land to honour Him. Each year, they joyfully celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi by installing an idol of Lalbaugcha Raja for ten days. This period of devotion and celebration culminates in a grand and colourful procession through the streets, as the idol is carried to the sea for visarjan, symbolising both gratitude and renewal.

On September 14, 2024, Ravi was on a trip to Mumbai with her clients, who were about to head back to the UK. It was just the end of Ganesh Chaturthi, and Ravi had one special wish: to visit Lalbaugcha Raja. But there was a challenge. During Ganesh Chaturthi, Lalbaugcha Raja is famously crowded, with devotees lining up for days just to get a brief darshan.

In the taxi, Ravi struck up a conversation with the driver—coincidentally also named Ravi! At one point, Baba suggested she ask the driver if he knew any shortcuts or tips for reaching Lalbaugcha Raja. Without missing a beat, Ravi the taxi driver called up a friend who he thought might be able to help.

The next day, after saying goodbye to her clients at the airport, Ravi visited several temples around the city, hoping for a call from the taxi driver’s friend. But by evening, it seemed her dream of visiting Lalbaugcha Raja might not come true. Disappointed, she returned to her hotel.

Then, at precisely 6 p.m., her phone rang—it was Ravi, the taxi driver, calling to say he was on his way to pick her up! It turned out that his friend, busy with a night shift, had finally reached out, and everything was set for her visit.

Once they arrived, Ravi was guided through the crowd by a female volunteer. The crowd was intense, a sea of people pushing and shoving, and she was packed tightly for nearly twenty minutes. But finally, Ravi reached the front, and in that magical moment, she bowed before Lord Ganesh, taking in the darshan and receiving His blessings. As she looked up, the overwhelming crush of the crowd faded away, leaving her feeling deeply blessed and peaceful. Even a nearby security guard remarked that she had received a truly special darshan.
